Frequently Asked Questions:
What do I need to bring?
Chess sets are provided. You can choose to bring a chess clock but it is not mandatory. Most parents and players will bring some form of entertainment for themselves between rounds such as reading material, snacks, and electronic devices.
Is there a lunch break?
There will be no designated lunch break. It is recommended that you bring a lunch with you and eat between rounds. Most students will not use all the time needed to complete their games and will most likely have an opportunity between rounds to make time to eat lunch or pick up something to eat.
How long will the tournament last?
After a tournament's scheduled start time, following rounds will begin as soon as all games have been scored and pairings have been posted. The tournament will end as soon as all four rounds are completed. Most tournaments are over by 1pm. There will be a short award ceremony at the end of the tournament.
How do the rounds work?
This is a swiss-style tournament with no eliminations. After the round is over, players report their scores to the tournament director and leave the tournament area until all games have finished. People with similar scores are paired in further rounds so that games remain competitive and clear winners can be decided later in the tournament.
Is my child ready for a chess tournament?
Understanding the basics is important in order to compete. As long as the prospective player understands how the pieces move, and the basic rules of checkmate, they should compete. Chess tournaments are meant to be events that create the opportunity to grow as a player. Tournaments are designed to pair players based on their overall score and allow all players the opportunity to compete with players near their playing strength.
What are the sections? In what section should I sign my child up?
There are three sections open to Kindergartners through 8th grade.
The K-2 section is open only to students in Kindergarten through 2nd grade.
The K-5 section is designed for 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders while the K-8 section is meant to be played by 6th, 7th, and 8th graders. Students in lower section that wish to challenge themselves are allowed to sign up into higher sections but it is not recommended unless the student is an experienced competitor.
